FYA book club

I met some women on campus who were interested in starting a Laramie branch of the Forever Young Adult book club. We read Libba Bray's Beauty Queens for the August meeting, and met last night to cuss and discuss.

Synopsis: A group of beauty queens on their way to the Miss Teen Dream pageant are stranded on a seemingly deserted island when their plane crashes. The queens have to pull together to survive by finding food, purifying water, building shelter, and honing their pageant skills while they wait to be rescued. Things take a turn for the worse when it turns out some of the girls are harboring secrets, and the island may not be uninhabited after all.

The verdict: This book is really funny, and I think that Bray does a good job of portraying teenage girls. That being said, there were some racy parts, and a pretty cutting commentary on society's emphasis on physical beauty. By the end, I felt like Bray lost a little steam. Bray builds a community of young women discovering who they are and celebrates their individuality, but by the end, some of the characters seemed like they became too complex for the author to handle. Everything gets wrapped up nice and neat, complete with a flash forward to the future. All in all, this was a fun read, and I think Bray did a good job of tempering the commentary on gender.

On a sidenote, the book club wore crepe paper sashes for the discussion. We also sported tiaras for a picture and got some funny looks. There's a guy who had the most entertaining dinner Jimmy John's has ever seen. You're welcome, sir.
